Slide 24

Cornus alba (FYI)

White dogwoods

Origin: Siberia, N. China, Korea

Hardiness Zone: 2

Exposure: Sun

Soil Conditions: Moist, well drained

Significant Features...

image50.jpg

Speaker Notes

  • The more sun, the better the variegated foliage
  • Like a River bed!

Slide 25

Cornus alba cultivars

White dogwoods

image51.jpg image53.jpg

Speaker Notes

  • Significant Features:
  • We are not looking at just ONE Cornus alba, but rather many cultivars of the original species… the point of THIS section is to appreciate the large variety of dogwoods beyond Red Osier and Yellow Twig types learned last year (Cornus sericea).

Slide 26

Cornus alba cultivars

White dogwoods

Characteristics

Round in shape - heights vary with cultivars

Leaves simple, ovate to elliptical, entire

Green or Variegated. Green usually has red Fall Colour.

Flowers white cyme - the cluster is showy - early Summer

Fruit - White drupe with bluish tinge in Fall

C. sericea

C. alba

image48.jpg

Speaker Notes

  • All dogwoods are similar in foliage, flower, and fruit
  • The Variegation shows up as white tips, or golden in the case of ‘Gouchaultii’
  • The Berry rule of thumb - do not eat white “berries”!
  • 90% of blue, black or purple berries are “safe”
  • 50% of red berries are edible
  • 10% of white or yellow berries are edible.
  • Siberian dogwood drupes tend toward the blue tones

Slide 27

Cornus alba ‘Bailhalo’ - Ivory Halo Dogwood

image26.png image34.png image36.png

Speaker Notes

  • ‘Bailhalo’ - Ivory Halo & ‘Elegantissima’ - Silver Leaf
  • Green with white tips, stems are a darker brown/red but still nice.
  • Definitely will find tip death in heavy clay soils that do not drain. Ivory Halo has been more reliable in Red Deer.

Slide 28

Cornus alba ‘Gouchaultii’ - Golden Variegated Dogwood

image46.jpg image43.jpg

Speaker Notes

  • The tallest of the variegated - mature height 2m
  • Can handle more shade
  • Yellow margin changes colour in fall

Slide 29

Cornus alba ‘Kesselringii’ - Kesselring dogwood

image53.jpg image39.png

Speaker Notes

  • Note the bright white lenticels on the vividly coloured new bark (common to all dogwood)
  • Kesselring is more purple… and tends to die back.
  • Leaves green with a purple hue in summer, then brilliant fall colour.
  • Also 2m height

Slide 30

Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ - Siberian Dogwood

image44.jpg image45.jpg image57.jpg

Speaker Notes

  • Siberian, Siberian Coral and even now Variegated Siberian Dogwood!
  • Tall dogwoods - stem colour more to the pink tone in Siberian Coral. Also have Fall colour.

Slide 31

Cornus alba cultivars

White dogwoods

Landscape Use

image42.png image38.png image40.png image37.png

Speaker Notes

  • Colourful bark = Winter interest
  • Stoloniferous branches (not as aggressive as other species, but still can be used)

Slide 32

Cornus alba cultivars

White dogwoods

Maintenance

Hard prune to encourage new wood

Check for tip death

image47.png

Speaker Notes

  • The new wood is the most colourful - it can be hard pruned to encourage this
  • Many dogwood cultivars will experience dieback - finding the right one for the right location is important. Once established, they tend to be fine.
  • If they are spotty (the form is no longer nice) - just cut the whole thing down.

Slide 33

CUPRESSACEAE

Cypress Family

All are trees or shrubs, erect or prostrate

Some species are important for timber and many

are used as ornamentals

Juniperus

Thuja

Cupressa

Leaves: needle like awl or awn shaped, closely adpressed to the branchFlowers: species are monoecious or dioeciousCones: ovulate cones, usually woody but Juniperus with fleshy scales

image59.jpg

Slide 34

CUPRESSACEAE

Juniperus horizontalis

Slide 35

Juniperus horizontalis Horizontal Juniper

Native to Alberta

many cultivars: Blue Chip, Hughes, Bar Harbour, Wapiti, etc.

Hardiness Zone 1

Exposure: full sun tolerates chinook winds

Soil: native to dry rocky areas need excellent drainage Tolerates heat tolerates saline soils better than other junipers.

image49.jpg

Slide 36

Significant Features

Singificant features

image60.jpg image56.jpg

Slide 37

Juniperus horizontalis Horizontal Juniper

Form: prostrate spreading

mat forming to low arching

Height: 30-45 cm

Spread : 3m ( depends on cultivar)

image58.jpg

Slide 38

Juniperus horizontalis Horizontal Juniper

Foliage: scale like on most of branch, awl shaped near the main stem, glaucouswhorled turns purple in the fall if exposed to cold

Stems will root at the nodesBranches long and narrow

Flowers dioecious - not significant (FYI)

Fruit: modified cone ( berry like)

blue in colour not always found on cultivated forms

low impact

image54.jpg image55.jpg

Slide 39

Juniperus horizontalis Horizontal Juniper

Landscape Use

native areas, reclamation, groundcover, foundation planting, good for erosion control mass planting dry sites

Maintenance

give them enough room some cultivars can sunscald in extreme years - mulch is beneficial

Problems - spruce spidermite
