To rank trees we use an importance score based on tree height, circumference and crown spread. The score, widely referred to as the US Champion Tree Score, was devised by Fred Besley, a forester in the State of
Maryland, in 1925. Because tree species vary greatly in potential size, the score is most meaningfully compared within and not between species. We calculate tree score for you, but if you are curious you can use the following formulas:
- Metric
- 2808 points per metre of Height + 0.3937 points per centimetre of Circumference + 0.8202 points per metre of
- Crown Spread
- Imperial
1 point per foot of Height + 1 point per inch of Circumference + 1 point for every four feet of Crown Spread
