Bulk Density Lab Name: Objective: Determine the bulk density of a soil and analyze the results Material Bulk Density kits – including mallots, cups, bases, cup holders ruler Penetrometer Pie plates (2 per group) Tape and marker Procedure 1. Using the 2 soils in the Landscape Pavilion assigned to your group, perform a soil texture test and a bulk density test on each. Follow the procedures demonstrated to take a sample for bulk density testing. 2. In the lab, empty each sample onto an aluminum pie plate, label with your group name and sample ID and put in the oven for 24 hours. 3. After 24 hours weigh samples and calculate for Bulk Density 4. Using the form below fill in your results 5. Research to determine whether your results lined up with others research and if any of the results are root inhibiting. (Make sure and cite your resources.) 1. Soil Texture ______________ Dry weight of soil ____________g Volume of soil ____________ cm3 Db of soil ____________g/cm3 2. Soil Texture Dry weight of soil ____________g Volume of soil ____________ cm3 Db of soil ____________g/cm3 . Determine the productivity of your soilUse the terms: high, medium or low Soil 1 Soil 2 Water holding Aeration Fertility Is the bulk density root inhibiting? If so, give one suggestion as to something you might do to make it more conducive to plant growth. Soil 1 Soil 2 Calculate the bulk density for the following 1. Oven dry weight of soil is 96 g Volume of soil is 75 cm3 2. The volume of a cylinder used to collect soil has a diameter of 6cm and a height of 4 cm. The oven dried soil weighs 160g
