Select one of the templates provided in class and populate it with herbaceous plant material from class, using a sustainability related theme: Butterfly Garden, Bee Garden, Sensory Garden, Medicinal Garden, etc. You must also select and state your colour scheme. Plants must be drawn to scale and clearly labelled using an alphabetical key code based on the common name (ie. May Night Salvia: MNS or SA…) Colour your symbols attractively (imagine that your customer is paying you $500 for this… is the value there?). Use the flower colour of the plant as a base colour, add in greens or other shades to help differentiate the plants from one another. Leave the mulch space blank or colour according to your plan. Make sure that labels are still clearly visible. You must use a minimum of 5 of the plants learned in ID. Plants from other years or woodies may be allowed if cleared with the Instructor. Select plants according to size, colour (make sure there is always something to look at), texture, exposure and growth habit. Select cultivars from a nursery website (such as Jeffries Nursery, Eagle Lake Nursery, Sunstar Nursery, Bron and Sons or Bylands) to get specific size ranges and colours. You must provide a Title Page (8.5x11) with your Name, the date, your colour scheme (type and colours) and your design goal. The next sheet is your template on 11x17. Your plant list must be in table format, landscape orientation and easy to read. It must include: Key (legend), Botanic name, Common Name, Quantity (total), Height and Spread (in metric, you are using metric scale) and colour. If you are doing a sensory or medicinal garden, you must state in this column what each plant contributes / how you will achieve your goals. You will also provide a seasonal interest chart. Print this chart out blank - with only the months of the year and your plants filled out. With marker or coloured pencil, fill in the bloom times accurately to demonstrate your knowledge of bloom times and winter interest or foliage value. Marks are awarded for this form as part of the format of your spec book, and further marks are awarded for having full season blooms (especially critical if you select a pollinator garden). The final page of your project is a seasonal maintenance chart (on 8.5x11 paper) divided by seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, Long Term (if applicable). Make sure to go through each plant and state how it should be cared for through the seasons. To support your professionalism, either submit it with a file cover, duotang, or folder. See the following links for samples of the plant list and maintenance document, as well as the marking rubric. Projects must be handed in on time, printed out. No electronic submissions will be accepted for this project.
