Each Company you work for will have a slightly different organizational structure - especially obvious if you work for a Sole Proprietor/Small Business (less than 10 employees, Employer works with the crew) or if you work for a Corporation (More employees, Employer does not work with crew, often there is separate book keeping and accounting staff).
In addition, the SECTOR you work in will affect your company structure - if you work residential, commercial, municipal, maintenance, or specialization (arboriculture, production, sod, nursery...), each of these will change the way your company works.
In the section below, please give us a snapshot of your company / your work life:
1) Your Name, the company you work for and the city you work in
2) The sector you work in (municipal, commercial, residential, specialization) and work focus (construction, maintenance, arb, spray, etc) Does the company shrink / shut down in winter or do you do snow removal?
3) How many employees are in the company (on average) and your position in the company (how much responsibility do you have - are you a labourer (just doing as you're told) or does your position involve planning and organization? Are you an owner?)
worth 5 points
4) Expand on your understanding of the business:
How do you receive your schedule? (Is it online, on paper, verbal?)
Is your schedule set, or does it change throughout the season (or the week!) - how many days per week and hours per day is normal?
How do you manage timesheets (is it an app, do you fill out paper sheets? How often do you submit?)
How do you receive your "orders for the day" - (is it communicated by the foreman at a morning meeting? Do you have a jobsite binder?)
Who does the book keeping? How does the person doing the invoicing receive information required for invoicing or payroll?
Who does the scheduling?
worth 4 points
After posting, go through your fellow classmates responses and see if anyone is set up the same as you are! Comment on similarities or surprising differences
worth 1 point
All written communication in this course shall be undertaken thoughtfully and professionally. Although there are not specific marks assigned for this, up to one mark will be taken away for carelessness including poor syntax, grammar and spelling.
