LANDSCAPE GARDENER APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM 3rd YEAR
IRRIGATION DESIGN ASSIGNMENT
The purpose of this assignment is to give you an understanding of the
design and the specification process. Your completed assignment should
include enough information to have a contractor bid on your project. You
are designing the irrigation to take into account for the best water
conservation practices. There are to be no areas left without automatic
irrigation.
The scaled plot plan shows all planted bed areas, turf areas and fixed
features. Design an irrigation system appropriate for your landscape.
Your drawing should include the following information
all sprinkler and emitter locations
all pipe locations and sizes
all valve locations and configuration
A separate type written Specifications Booklet should include the following
information:
operating pressure, precipitation rate and total flow rate of each zone
identification of manufacturer, sprinkler types, valves, nozzles, special
features, etc.
any relevant construction notes
a friction loss calculation to either the highest or the farthest point in
the design
Assume you have 50 psi and 12 gpm available at the Point of Connection
(POC); the POC location for your plan will be assigned to you . Your choice
of sprinkler manufacturer is open; try to maintain product uniformity
within your design. Irrigation catalogues will be provided to you to select
products suitable for design.
IRRIGATION DESIGN EVALUATION CRITERIA
Name:_____________________________ Mark: _____/70
ZONING / 10marks
- Have zones been clearly defined and labeled?
- Has the number of zones been kept to a minimum?
SPRINKLER COVERAGE / 10marks
- Is there adequate (head to head) coverage over the entire irrigated
area?
- Are there wet or dry spots anywhere?
- Is there collateral damage from any area?
VALVE LOCATIONS / 10 marks
- are all the zones valved? With the right sized valve?
- are the valves located correctly to minimize pipe installation?
PIPE DESIGN / 10 marks
- are all pipes sized and labeled correctly?
- are all pipes properly joined and shown correctly at crossings?
- have underground sleeves been clearly identified?
DRAWING / PRESENTATION / 10marks
- have all sprinklers, pipes, valves been labeled properly?
- are all the lines drawn straight? Are proper symbols being used?
- is the drawing neat and clean and easy to read?
SPECIFICATION BOOKLET / 20 marks
- are all the relevant pieces of equipment listed?
- are the specifications detailed enough for an installer?
- Is it clear how the components are to be installed?
